2026 Retirement Investment Outlook

December 2025

As global economic conditions and demographic trends continue to evolve, the retirement investment environment is facing both unprecedented challenges and opportunities. With 2026 approaching, whether retirement is still some way off or imminent, investors should revisit three core questions to ensure their retirement plans remain relevant.

Periodic review of the three core questions in retirement planning

  1. Are retirement savings sufficient to meet future needs? Progress toward retirement savings is closely linked to the time remaining until retirement. Without clear goals and a defined timeline, many individuals feel uncertain about their ability to sustain their desired lifestyle after retirement.

  2. Are the most suitable investment accounts being used? Making effective use of employer retirement plans and tax-advantaged investment accounts remains key to building retirement savings. Increasingly, savers are seeking personalized financial advice to optimize asset allocation and enhance return potential.

  3. Is asset allocation sufficiently diversified and appropriate? Constructing an effective asset allocation requires balancing one’s risk tolerance, retirement timeline and the macroeconomic environment. Younger investors tend to be more concerned about market volatility, whereas older investors are often more focused on the impact of inflation and interest rate movements on purchasing power—factors that may affect portfolio suitability.

Global retirement survey: confidence and challenges

These three questions reflect the common uncertainties many investors face in retirement planning. According to T. Rowe Price’s Hong Kong Retirement Survey conducted in September 2025, Hong Kong investors are increasingly open to more diverse and non-traditional retirement models. However, a lack of comprehensive understanding of investment planning continues to hinder progress toward an ideal retirement lifestyle.

This challenge is not unique to Hong Kong. Our recent global survey of retirement savers across the United States, Japan, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia shows that individuals worldwide face similar challenges and concerns, underscoring the importance of thorough planning amid uncertainty. The findings also reveal several international trends that may offer valuable insights for Hong Kong investors:

  • Inflation remains the primary economic concern globally, cited by 42% of respondents, followed by geopolitical events (30%) and interest rates (27%). Those under greater financial pressure are particularly sensitive to inflation and interest rate movements, while Gen Z shows heightened concern about stock market volatility.
  • Significant divergence in economic outlook: Half of respondents anticipate a recession by mid-2026. Regionally, savers in Japan (62%) and Canada (56%) are the most pessimistic, while those in the United Kingdom and Australia are relatively more optimistic.
  • Notable gender differences: In the United States, Canada and Australia, men tend to express greater confidence in the economic outlook, whereas women are more likely to report uncertainty.

The survey also finds that savers worldwide often lack confidence due to difficulties in determining how much they need to save and when they may be able to retire. Developing a clear and personalized financial roadmap—covering a target retirement age, sustainable spending levels and specific steps for adjusting savings and investments—can help improve confidence and planning effectiveness.

Looking ahead, the global economy may continue to experience fluctuations, presenting new challenges and uncertainties. For Hong Kong investors, a robust retirement plan should be built on three core principles: starting to save early, setting clear objectives, and regularly reviewing and adjusting strategies. Regardless of market conditions, these fundamentals can help investors remain in control and lay a solid foundation for a secure and fulfilling retirement.
