What is a passkey?
A passkey serves as a digital credential between your T. Rowe Price accounts and your web browser or mobile device, enabling seamless authentication without the need for a password or a multifactor authentication (MFA) access code. Passkeys reduce the need for entering long and complex passwords by relying on your device to authenticate you.
What advantages does a passkey offer over a standard password?
The advantages of a passkey include:
Can passkeys be used for both desktop and mobile? And how do I know if I can use passkeys with my devices?
Passkeys can be set up and used on most modern desktop and mobile devices and shared across devices, but some options are device- and browser-specific; check the documentation for your specific passkey storage solution to make sure.
What are passkey device/browser setup requirements?
Operating systems that support passkeys:
Web browsers that support passkeys:
These requirements are subject to change.
What are the ways to set up a passkey?
Most devices allow you to set up a passkey using a variety of verification methods like biometrics (such as a fingerprint or Face ID) or a device password. You may also have the option to use a security accessory like a Bluetooth smartwatch or a YubiKey. When you go to the "Manage Passkey" section in your profile, your device will ask you to choose how you want to protect your passkey.
If I set up a passkey, can I still use my username and password or password manager?
Yes. Passkeys do not currently replace usernames and passwords—they are an additional option. At any time, you can use your username and password or password manager to log in to your T. Rowe Price account.
Should I create a passkey on a public computer or shared device?
No. For your account security, passkeys should be created and stored only on private devices you trust. Public and/or shared devices may be compromised, allowing unauthorized persons to access your passkeys.
Can I use a single passkey to access my online T. Rowe Price account across different devices?
It depends: Some browsers and mobile device types allow for a passkey to be sharable across devices. Check the documentation for your specific passkey storage solution to see what sharing capabilities are available. As an alternative option, you can create and store multiple passkeys in order to authenticate from other devices that don’t permit sharing.
Can I create more than one passkey to access my online T. Rowe Price account from different devices?
Yes. You can create multiple passkeys from different devices for your online T. Rowe Price account.
Can I use the same passkey for both the T Rowe Price website and T. Rowe Price Personal® mobile app?
It depends on where the passkey is stored. Passkeys stored on a mobile device can be accessed by both the T. Rowe Price Personal mobile app and most mobile web browsers. Some passkeys stored outside of the mobile browser, such as on a desktop PC for web use, might not be accessible on a mobile device. However, you can have multiple passkeys registered on your T. Rowe Price profile, making it possible to use different passkeys for the same username.
Can more than one user share a passkey?
No. Each passkey is associated with one specific corresponding user/username.
How do I manage my passkeys?
You can manage passkeys from your Account Profile page, under the ‘security preferences’ section. Select ‘Manage Passkey’ to view and manage your passkeys
How do I delete a passkey?
Deleting a passkey requires two steps, because it has both "public" and "private" components, each of those components need to be deleted. The steps are:
What makes a passkey a secure method for logging in?
Passkeys employ “public-private-key cryptography,” which means every passkey has two linked pieces: A public key and a private key. The public key is stored at the website or mobile app; the private key is stored securely in the user’s device or password manager, such as iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager. Both halves are necessary to complete a login. (Note that public and private keys are not passwords.)
How are MFAs (Multi-Factor Authenticators) and passkeys different?
MFAs and passkeys use different methods to verify your identity. While an MFA requires the use of a password plus one other form of identification, such as a one-time access code, passkeys don't require multiple forms of identification. A passkey completes all MFA needs in one step. And unlike MFAs, passkeys can be considered “password-less” access.
How are passkeys stored and protected?
A passkey is stored on your device, is unique to you, and is unique to the website it is used for. There are multiple options to protect it, such as biometrics.
When using biometrics, how does the login experience differ between a passkey and a password?
Using biometrics with a passkey is the same convenient experience as using biometrics to send a saved password, but more secure. That’s because a passkey uses technology that changes it every time it's used whereas a password never changes and can be stolen in transit.
When I use a biometric to sign in, does the information get sent to T. Rowe Price?
Your personal biometric information (e.g., fingerprints or facial features) never leaves your personal device. T. Rowe Price does not receive or store any personal biometric information.
What happens if my device is lost or compromised?
If there is any risk that your device or passkey has been either stolen, lost, or otherwise compromised, log in and disable your passkey function immediately. You can also contact T. Rowe Price’s call center (XXX-XXX-XXXX) to ensure the passkey was disabled properly, and/or to delete the passkey. Note that the security of your device and biometric identifier is your responsibility, not that of T. Rowe Price.
