Interning at T. Rowe Price: Experience and Opportunity

Debi Chatterjee:

When you’re an intern, you're treated as a member of the team, and your project is an important project. It's not thrown away. I think lots of internships have you do busywork just so that you're doing something while you're there, and then nobody ever hears about that ever again. Here, they don't do that. Your work is clearly important. It feels like you're valuable.

Aakash Patel:

If I was to think about the first couple of weeks I joined here, the first week was a lot of inductions, a lot of training, getting kind of sped up with the organisation itself, talking with a bunch of people from the business. Because I think one of the most important things is that you do understand the business in this job.

Therese Nkadi:

When I first joined within my team, I had a technical buddy and a personal buddy, so more of a casual buddy. My technical buddy, I worked with him on his tasks, and we'd pair code, which is basically when just two people are working on one thing at the same time, two developers. So, we did that for quite a bit. And then eventually, I then started owning things myself.

Debi Chatterjee:

When you get out of your seat to talk to someone, you might be talking about just what your project is or how your internship is going, and they might be telling you about their project. And in all of that there's sort of stealth learning, where without even trying, you're learning about the company and the technologies that are used and just how people work and what their process is.

Therese Nkadi:

I thought I needed to know everything, but everyone knew I wasn't going to know everything and I didn't need to know everything. So, it was nice. I was given the space to learn and grow.

Aakash Patel:

We have a ratio of lots of senior folk with an ever-growing younger population, and I think that when you enter a team, you're surrounded by really accomplished technology folk in this sector. I think it's really valuable because you're going to get mentorship everywhere.

Debi Chatterjee:

My team is a couple of people in the UK and a couple of people in America, and so I was kind of concerned that I wouldn't be able to get to know anyone in America because they’re far away in a different time zone and everything. As soon as they're online, they make the effort to find out, “What have you been up to today?” “Do you need any help with anything today?” Or if I do need help with something, they're happy to get on a call with me and talk to me about it.

Aakash Patel:

The early talent team do a really good job of obviously hosting socials, making sure that we're talking to each other. They host a bunch of learning sessions for us, as well. The people that organise the internship make a really conscious choice of putting a volunteering day in the first couple of weeks. And so this means that we're all out of the office, but all together. It's a great way of bonding with each other and finding out what everyone's working on, what everyone's personality is like, and it makes it very easy for everyone to become close friends.
