31-Aug-2024 - Scott Berg, Portfolio Manager,
We think broad global equity valuations are on the fuller side of fair, with U.S. stocks in particular being more stretched. Going forward, we believe corporate fundamentals and share price will matter more, and we remain focused on identifying and investing in companies operating in fertile growing end markets with good management teams and competitive advantages.

31-Aug-2024 - Scott Berg, Portfolio Manager,
In Australian dollar terms, global equities lost ground in August as the Australian dollar strengthened against other major currencies, leading to lowered returns for local investors. Markets began the month with a sharp sell-off as signs of moderating global growth ignited concerns of a possible recession in the U.S. Stocks rebounded somewhat from early losses, however, as optimism about interest rate cuts and additional data points supporting a soft economic landing helped drive bullish investor sentiment. Within the portfolio, our holdings in financials contributed the most to relative returns. Shares of a large Latin American digital banking platform were strong following better-than-expected quarterly results, with earnings higher than consensus forecasts. We have high conviction in the firm and think the company’s highly disruptive digital banking platform can continue to gain share and even scale internationally, which provides it with a long growth runway. Conversely, stock picks in industrials and business services hurt relative results. After posting a strong gain in July on the back of decent results, shares of a less than truckload transportation company gave back some of those gains in August as a tough freight backdrop weighed on sentiment. Longer term, we believe company is well positioned to gain from pricing power and a strong competitive position and that it stands to benefit when the freight market turns.
31-Jan-2024 - Scott Berg, Portfolio Manager,
We have an overweight position in financials. We currently have exposure to what we believe are high-quality U.S. banks but are meaningfully underweight European and Japanese peers that broadly have more negative credit exposure. We have a greater allocation to insurance companies than we have typically had in the past, as an improving pricing environment and better yields on portfolio investments have created a positive near- and medium-term setup. We continue to own several emerging market financials that we believe are undervalued and underappreciated and have exposure to high-quality alternative asset managers and leading capital markets companies.
